Focusing on European natural fibres, Weave Up! couldn’t overlook wool properties and possibilities in design. As wool fibres have a scaly surface, it’s an excellent insulating material against heat and cold. Wool is hydrophilic, absorbing up to a third of its weight before feeling wet to the touch. This ability to absorb moisture prevents a build-up of static electricity, hence wool does not attract dirt and dust from the air. Wool is also more fire resistant than many other fibres.
During the first year of residency, in 2023, participants visited Lithuania wool companies and heritage places such as ; the wool residence program of Laura Garbštienė, Danspin yarn factory and the FITE’s »Imagine! » exhibition held in House of Histories
For the workshop in Creuse (France) in 2024, the wool group was invited to experiment in Villa Châteaufavier led by Lainamac and the Cité Internationale of Tapestry in Aubusson. At that time a wool jacket prototype for shearers and several experiments for down jacket filling were made, under the supervision of our wool master designer; Elisabeth Berthon. On top of it, participants were invited to discover Cardelaine and Terrade companies, the FITE – Textile Biennial, La Main Nue workshop, and the spinning and quilting know-how of Claire Salin and Isabelle Boubet.
